Contractor Growth Library

How to measure a contractor website without pretending every click is revenue.

Traffic, rankings and clicks are useful signals. They are not automatically leads, qualified opportunities or customers. A measurement system becomes useful when it helps the contractor decide what is working, where leads came from, and what remains unknown.

What to look for

Start with the evidence ladder

Work Output is what was shipped. A Signal is an interaction such as a search click or phone-button tap. An Attributed Inquiry is a real contact tied to a source with supportable evidence. A Verified Business Outcome is a customer/booking/revenue result confirmed by the business. Do not jump levels.

What to look for

Test the actual lead path

A tag firing does not prove the business received the form. Submit the live form, confirm the success state, confirm delivery, and then verify the measurement event.

What to look for

Use source labels the owner understands

Google organic, Google Business Profile, paid search, referral, reactivation email, direct/unknown and other simple categories are often more useful than a complicated multi-touch attribution model on tiny sample sizes.

What to look for

Unknown is a valid answer

If the source cannot be established responsibly, use Unknown. Forcing every lead into “Google” makes the report look better and the decision quality worse.

What to look for

Treat calls carefully

A tap on a phone number is only an interaction. If phone source matters enough to change spending decisions, call-tracking can be useful — but only when volume and economics justify the added software/complexity.

What to look for

Qualified opportunities are more useful than raw leads

Three real roof-replacement opportunities can be more valuable than ten junk forms. Someone in the business has to help identify which inquiries were actually a fit.

What to look for

Small samples require humility

When a contractor only gets a handful of conversions each month, short before/after changes are directional evidence, not proof that one design or SEO change caused the result.

The management decision

If every click is called a lead, you cannot tell what is actually working.

The practical goal is not perfect attribution. It is enough trustworthy evidence to decide whether the site, Google visibility or follow-up process deserves more attention and money.

Useful reporting: keep signals, real inquiries, qualified opportunities and won jobs separate. If the source cannot be established, label it Unknown instead of forcing a success story.
