Wix vs. custom-coded

Wix is designed to make getting a website online very easy. The useful comparison for a local business is what you gain from that convenience, what becomes platform-dependent, and when a more custom build is worth the extra work.

01Wix: the honest pros and cons
02The portability tradeoff, stated plainly
03What it costs over time
  • Wix is an accessible starting point: a visual editor, a large template library and AI-assisted setup can get a draft online quickly without writing code.
  • Builder output can become script-heavy depending on the template, apps and implementation. The useful question is the live experience: page weight, interaction, crawlability and whether the site is easy to maintain.
  • Wix does not provide a portable export of the finished Wix site into independent HTML/CSS/JS. Moving away generally means rebuilding the presentation on another platform, so portability is worth considering before the business becomes dependent on the site.
  • A custom-coded build takes more upfront work but gives the business direct ownership of the core site files and more control over structure, performance and future hosting choices.

Wix is common among small businesses, and it is easy to see why: the editor is accessible, templates are plentiful and AI-assisted setup can get a draft online quickly. That can be a perfectly reasonable starting point. The more useful question is whether the specific site still supports the business once search, conversion, ownership and maintenance become more important.

Wix: the honest pros and cons

Where it's strong: the on-ramp. Wix makes it easy to start, offers a large template and app ecosystem, and its SEO tooling includes the core controls a normal small-business site needs. The convenience is real; the trade-off is that implementation quality still depends on the template, apps and how the site is assembled.

Where it can become limiting: implementation weight and control vary by template, apps and how the site is built. Some Wix sites perform well; others accumulate scripts and layout overhead. Measure the actual mobile experience instead of assuming the platform tells you the answer. Search visibility also depends far more on useful content, local authority, reviews and relevance than on the builder name alone.

What staying on Wix means for ownership and portability

Portability is the bigger structural trade-off. Wix does not provide a portable export of the finished Wix presentation as an independent HTML/CSS/JavaScript site. Content and domains can move, but changing platforms generally means rebuilding the presentation. That is worth knowing before years of design decisions accumulate inside the platform.

That does not make Wix a bad product; it means the website is partly a platform relationship rather than only a set of files the business controls. A custom-coded Sileon site takes the opposite approach: the core site files remain an asset the client owns.

What it costs over time

Wix pricing changes by plan and optional apps, so the relevant comparison is the total cost of the setup you actually need over the period you expect to keep it. Sileon publishes its own starting prices so the two models can be compared without pretending one is automatically cheaper.

Can a Wix site still rank and show up in AI search?

Wix provides the core SEO controls a normal small-business site needs, including titles, descriptions and redirects. The decision should not be “can Wix do SEO?” — it can. The more useful questions are whether the current site is fast and clear enough, whether the service/location content is strong, and whether the business wants more direct control over structure and ownership.

When staying on Wix is the smarter move

Stay on Wix when it is meeting the business need, the editing convenience matters, and there is no verified performance, conversion or ownership problem worth paying to solve. Consider moving when the current site itself becomes a meaningful limitation — not just because Sileon sells a different architecture.

Frequently asked

Can I transfer my Wix site to custom code?

Not as a standalone copy of the finished Wix presentation. A move usually means rebuilding the site while keeping the domain, preserving useful content and mapping important old URLs to the new structure as carefully as possible. The redesign page explains that migration process.

Is Wix really that slow?

Test the actual site rather than the platform stereotype. Use PageSpeed Insights and your own phone, then look at the customer path: can the page become useful quickly, does it stay stable, and can a visitor contact the business without friction? A poor result is a reason to investigate; it is not automatic proof that Wix must be replaced.

Wix keeps emailing me about upgrades. Do I need them?

Plan, app, storage and email costs can change the total over time. Before adding another tier, compare the full annual cost with the value you are getting from the editing convenience and bundled tools. The calculator is there to make that comparison concrete instead of assuming either model is cheaper.

Squarespace vs. custom-coded

Squarespace and Wix are both hosted builders, but their editing systems and trade-offs differ. The Squarespace comparison covers ownership, maintenance, SEO controls and when staying on the platform may still be the sensible choice.
